Lidl – Case Study – Managing and Monitoring Food Safety

This article was prompted by recent news that Lidl has withdrawn a batch of potatoes from sale due to exceeding the permitted level of pesticide residues. Such incidents highlight how crucial effective food safety management is at every stage of the supply chain.

As part of a pilot project carried out in collaboration with NASK and KOWR, we developed a potato traceability system based on the FarmCloud platform. Thanks to this experience, we can clearly demonstrate how our solution supports producers, processors, and retail chains in preventing similar incidents:

  • Monitoring of production based on actual field and crop data (utilizing the integration of FarmPortal with FoodPass as a supplier portal)
  • Support for crop audits – planning and logging farm visits, photographic documentation, notes, assignment of responsible persons
  • Management of soil and crop sample collection and circulation at each production stage (field, warehouse, loading dock, etc.)
  • Handling of laboratory testing – initiated by buyers and technologists, with automated result processing and comprehensive documentation including comments
  • Blocking of suppliers in case of detected irregularities and implementation of corrective action plans
  • Control of logistics and transport – ensuring full traceability, evaluation of packaging quality, visual appearance, and taste characteristics

The FarmCloud system offers real, practical support in implementing quality and sustainability policies that meet both consumer expectations and retail requirements.

Finally – despite the situation – Lidl deserves recognition for its responsible approach. Making the costly but correct decision to withdraw the product demonstrates the importance of transparency and accountability throughout the food supply chain.
